On the chance occurrences that led him to become an artist:
"If you have a dream, you’ll never see the end of it. You’ll never know how you get to the end—at all. You just have to go. And you have to trust that you’re going to figure it out, and that there’s a lot of people that are going to help you along the way."
On the support provided by the kid lit community:
"We’re not competing against each other. We all need to just make the book that only we could make."
